Sports Excellence
Known for its community enthusiasm, volunteerism and support,
the Red Deer Region stands behind its athletes and fulfills its
commitment to hosting great events. Along with the two-time hosts
of the Scotties Tournament of
Hearts, the region has hosted other major national and
international events including World Curling Championships and
national figure skating events, as well as being home to the
Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, Canyon Ski Resort, the upgraded
Recreation Centre, expanded GH Dawe Community Centre and Red Deer
College.
Advantageously situated midway between Edmonton and Calgary, and
only an hour's drive from each city's international airport, Red
Deer's convenience along with the many great trade show,
agriculture, entertainment and sports facilities, make it an ideal
host for a variety of sports and cultural events.
Premier Venues
Facilities such as Westerner Park host more than 1,500 events and
attract 1.5 million visitors each year. With such impressive
numbers, it's apparent why they have plans to grow. Last year, the
Westerner Exposition Association signed a land lease agreement with
the City of Red Deer to increase their land by an additional 200
acres, and this year they have set plans in motion to expand and
upgrade the ENMAX Centrium with $3.5 million of grant
funding coming from the Province, the City and the County.
"The upgrade includes 14 more luxury suites and an additional
1,000 seats to be added to the already 6,000 seat ENMAX Centrium
facility," says Roxanne Kirton, Marketing Manager for Westerner
Park. "The expansion will have a significant economic impact on
Central Alberta and will increase the region's ability to attract
national, international and world events."
